colewriting: Changing Tack

After a year, the time has come for a slight course correction for ColeWriting.com. When this blog was begun I was just entering a new phase of my writing life and was focused on freelance magazine writing. While this was a wonderful step to take –  writing full-time for online and print magazines – I continued to work on my fiction. At first, the going was slow, as I continued to work on a novel I had started in September of 2007. But as I got deeper into the novel and began to find my stride, I found that my freelance work for a few websites was breaking the “fictive dream” I sought to be in as I wrote my novel. I realized that at some point I would have to make a decision about where my energy would be deployed: Would I focus on freelance writing or would I focus on my novel?

I thought about what I really wanted to create as a writer, about where I wanted to be in five years. Once I thought about my dilemma in those terms the answer was simple: The novel is the thing!

That of course brings us to this website, another creative outlet that I love. As I looked around the site the other day I felt that the focus of www.ColeWriting.com needed to evolve too. So, the site will continue, but the focus will be on fiction and on the steps I am taking as I complete and refine my novel in progress. Along the way I will do my best to be honest about the trials and tribulations of writing fiction, and I will do my utmost to set down markers for those who find this site. Perhaps something I discover on my path will help other writers along the way.
